Publicly owned forests could be managed to deliver nature and climate goals in the EU. But EUSTAFOR, which represents state forest organisations across the EU, is too busy lobbying to gut environmental legislation and has lost their focus on serving the public interest.
Recent lowlights include EUSTAFOR lobbying to delay a deforestation ban, to weaken forest carbon uptake targets, and to avoid restoring degraded forests.
In an open letter, 25 NGOs from 19 countries call on EUSTAFOR to stop allying with the pulp and paper industry, large private landowners and agro-industry, and instead focus on delivering forests for the public good.
